Internal vs External Wind Pickleball Posts

There are two different winding options for pickleball posts: external wind and internal wind. The external wind option means the cable and winding mechanism are exposed on the outside of the post. Whereas an internal wind post means the pickleball net cable is fed over the top of the post and into the posts inside winding mechanism. Most users prefer the internal winding system as it looks more seamless and professional. On both options, the handle can be removed and stored elsewhere as a security measure.

Steel Strength

Douglas® pickleball posts range in thickness from 2-7/8” o.d. 8-gauge steel to 3” o.d. heavy 11-gauge steel wall thickness. The post you choose should depend on the type of pickleball court that it’s getting installed on. If the posts are being installed on a high-use public court, a heavy wall steel post is the best option.

Color Options

Pickleball posts from Douglas are available in black or dark green. All posts are manufactured with a thick baked-on powder coat finish. The powder coat creates a smooth durable finish that is rust resistant.

Installation Methods

Douglas offers traditional in-ground pickleball posts, surface mount pickleball posts, and portable pickleball systems. Standard in-ground pickleball net posts may be permanently installed into the court’s surface, but it’s recommended that they are set in ground sleeves. Setting the posts in sleeves is more expensive initially but in addition to allowing multiple uses for the court, such installation prevents the future need to dig up the court to replace old posts.
Surface mount posts are gaining popularity since ground sleeves are not required for installation. Surface mounts are ideal for converting basketball and tennis courts to pickleball courts.

Ground Sleeves

When choosing pickleball net post ground sleeves, make sure you choose the correct diameter for the posts you’ll be using. All posts and ground sleeve pages have the corresponding products listed in the description, so you are sure to order the correct product. All ground sleeves, t-plugs, and tie-down anchors are made from durable materials including galvanized steel, aluminum, and PVC.
Net post foundations should be no less than 18” in diameter at the top and not less than 30” at the bottom. Foundations should be at least 36” deep. The appropriate depth depends on the soil conditions and the amount of freezing activity at the site.

Pickleball net posts are set 22” apart. The measurement should be made from the center of one post to the center of the other. Refer to the official USAPA pickleball court construction for complete specifications.
