Extra Ballpark Padding Boosts Player Safety

March 4, 2026

Extra padding on fields should lead to extra safety on fields. That’s the hope, as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) added new rules mandating increased ballpark padding for hard surfaces like brick and concrete by January 2027 for all baseball and softball fences, backstops, and dugouts.

This rule, aimed at protecting athletes from impacts during slides and plays, marks a significant safety upgrade for college baseball and softball facilities nationwide. The action will boost player safety from bodily collisions, requiring coverage from one foot off the ground up to six feet or the fence top.

What’s changing?

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a new rule that requires padding on hard surfaces in baseball and softball stadiums.

  • Target surfaces requiring padding include: Brick, concrete, wood fences, dugout railings, and sideline fences. Looking for quality padding equipment for these surfaces? National Sports Products offers a variety of durable selections here: https://nationalsportsproducts.com/product-category/baseball/ball-park-padding
  • Padding specifications: Must start no more than one foot from the ground and extend up to six feet or the top of the surface, whichever is shorter.
  • Project deadline: All facilities must comply by January 1, 2027.

Why the change?

Player safety is the primary driver. These rules address the risk of serious injury from athletes colliding with hard, unpadded surfaces during fast-paced plays, slides, and outfield chases.

Benefits of padding

  • Reduced injuries: Softens potential impacts from collisions.
  • Increased confidence: Provides players with the confidence they need to play an aggressive game without fear of severe injury.

Safety is always crucial in baseball and softball because, despite seeming less dangerous than other sports, they cause many Emergency Room visits because of impacts from balls, bats, falls, and collisions. Collisions with hard surfaces can injure players, causing concussions, broken bones, fractures, and bruising, as well as injuries to the hands, torso, teeth, eyes, limbs, and face.

Other safety measures to consider: Padding isn’t the only safety measure to keep in mind! In addition to these NCAA padding mandate steps, other baseball and softball measures are also worth consideration:

  • Protective equipment: Helmets (with faceguards), catcher’s gear, and protective eyewear (polycarbonate) absorb impact, reducing head and eye injuries.
  • Proper technique: Learning safe sliding (avoiding headfirst), running with helmets, and correct pitching mechanics reduces strain.
  • Safety equipment: Using safety bases and softer safety balls lowers the risk of severe impacts like commotio cordis (heart disruption).
  • Conditioning & rest: Adequate warm-ups, conditioning, and recovery time prevent muscle strains and overuse injuries.
  • Rules & awareness: Following rules and being aware of surroundings can prevent many accidents.

Who would be affected by
the NCAA padding mandate?

All NCAA baseball and softball programs, as well as the facilities that host them.
